Custom poly sheeting is polyethylene film made to your width and thickness instead of whatever fits on a store shelf. It comes off our Orlando blown film lines as a tube, gets slit open into sheet and is wound on rolls built for your crew or your equipment.
If your spec falls outside what we run, we source it through partner extruders and manage the order for you. Either way you get one supplier and one engineer who knows your job.
Custom Poly Sheeting vs Hardware Store Rolls
A store roll of poly sheeting is built to fit a shelf. It comes in a few standard sizes and the label rarely tells you what resin is inside.
That is fine for a weekend project. It gets expensive when your business goes through sheeting every week and half of every roll ends up trimmed, seamed or doubled up.
| What changes | Store roll | Custom sheeting from Prime Film |
|---|---|---|
| Width | A handful of fixed sizes | Built to your width within our line range. Wider jobs are sourced through our partners. |
| Gauge | A few common gauges such as 4 mil and 6 mil | The exact mil your job needs |
| Resin | Often not listed | A stated blend, such as LLDPE for puncture resistance |
| UV protection | Varies by brand | UV stabilizer sized to how long the sheeting stays outside |
| Color | Mostly clear or black | Clear, black, white or a custom color blended at the extruder |
| Printing | None | Your logo, warnings or install marks printed on the sheet |
| Volume | Priced one roll at a time | Priced per production run and shipped by the pallet |
4 Mil vs 6 Mil Poly Sheeting
A 6 mil sheet is 0.006 inch thick. A 4 mil sheet is 0.004 inch.
That extra 2 mil is 50 percent more plastic in every square foot. Resin is bought by the pound, so the heavier sheet costs more to make and more to ship.
Six mil earns that cost where the sheeting takes a beating. Think ground contact, foot traffic, rough lumber and long outdoor exposure. Four mil is often plenty for dust walls, paint protection and short-term covers.
Here is the part most buyers miss. Resin can matter as much as thickness.
LLDPE (linear low density polyethylene) is tougher than LDPE at the same gauge. A well-built LLDPE blend can sometimes do the job of a thicker LDPE sheet and use less plastic. That is why we look at LDPE versus LLDPE before we simply add mil.
How Poly Sheeting Is Made From Blown Film
Blown film comes off the line as a flattened tube called layflat. Slit one folded edge and the tube opens into a single sheet twice the layflat width. Slit both edges and you get two separate sheets.
Sheeting that stays folded on the roll is often called centerfold. It unrolls narrow and opens wide on the job, which makes a wide sheet much easier to handle and store.
Poly Sheeting or Finished Bags?
If your crew is cutting and taping sheeting into bags, finished bags may cost less in labor. Our sister company Serv-Pak shares our Orlando building and supplies polyethylene bags and roll stock. Need a tube instead of a sheet? See our lay flat poly tubing.
