Gauge bands show up as repeating thick-and-thin stripes running in the machine direction around a roll of film. They are different from random gauge variation because they repeat at a predictable interval, and that repetition is the single most useful clue for diagnosing where they come from.

Die gap irregularities

If the annular die gap is not perfectly uniform around its circumference, because of wear, contamination, or an assembly issue, the film will extrude thicker where the gap is wider and thinner where it is narrower. Because the die gap geometry does not change as the bubble rotates, this produces a stable, repeating band pattern that lines up consistently roll after roll.

Air ring cooling inconsistency

An air ring that delivers uneven cooling air volume or velocity around the bubble circumference causes sections of the film to solidify at different draw ratios than neighboring sections. This produces gauge bands that may shift position slightly between runs, depending on small variations in air ring alignment or buildup of debris on the air ring lip.

Resin feed or melt temperature fluctuation

If melt temperature or output rate oscillates rhythmically, often tied to a feed screw or melt pump issue, the bubble diameter and wall thickness will pulse in sync, creating bands that repeat at a time-based interval rather than a fixed circumferential position. This type of banding tends to show up as diagonal or non-stationary stripes rather than fixed vertical ones.

How to localize the cause before adjusting anything

Mark the bubble at a fixed reference point and track whether the gauge band stays in the same circumferential position run after run. A fixed position points to the die or air ring hardware. A position that drifts or appears time-based rather than position-based points to melt temperature, screw speed, or feed consistency instead. Diagnosing this correctly before adjusting die bolts or air ring settings prevents chasing a hardware fix for a process problem, or the reverse.

What a long-term fix looks like

Recurring gauge bands traced to die wear usually require die reconditioning or bolt adjustment rather than a process workaround. Bands traced to air ring fouling are usually solved with a cleaning and alignment check on a regular maintenance schedule. Bands traced to melt fluctuation point toward extruder maintenance, screw condition, or resin feed consistency. Treating the symptom with downstream gauge control software can mask the issue temporarily, but it does not fix the underlying hardware or process condition causing it.
