How many layers can a co-extruded film have?
Co-extrusion runs multiple resin layers through a single die at the same time, fusing them into one film while each layer keeps its own job. Our lines handle structures from a basic three-layer film up through more complex multi-layer builds, with each layer engineered for a specific function rather than just adding bulk.
A typical structure might use an outer layer for printability and slip, a core layer for bulk strength or stiffness, and an inner sealing layer optimized for hot tack and seal strength. Barrier structures add a tie layer and an EVOH or similar barrier layer in the middle, isolated from moisture by the surrounding polyethylene. More layers generally means more control, you can put exactly the right resin where it is needed instead of compromising one layer to do several jobs at once.
The right layer count is driven by the application, not by adding complexity for its own sake. We will recommend the simplest structure that reliably meets your strength, barrier, and sealing requirements.
