Retail shelf bags are optimized for presentation and shelf interaction
A bag designed for retail display prioritizes clarity, print quality, and a controlled hand feel, since it gets picked up, inspected, and compared against neighboring products before purchase. It generally does not need to survive a conveyor belt, an automated sorting facility, or a multi-leg parcel journey involving multiple handoffs between carriers.
E-commerce mailers face a completely different abuse profile
A bag entering a parcel network gets sorted by machinery, dropped from conveyor heights, compressed under other packages, and handled by people who never see what is inside. It needs significantly higher puncture and tear resistance than a shelf bag, because the consequences of a tear are not a slightly bent package on a shelf, but a damaged or missing product and a return.
Seal strength has to survive transit stress, not just a quality check
Shelf bags are sealed once and largely left alone until a customer opens them deliberately. E-commerce mailers experience seal stress throughout transit from compression, flexing, and impact, which means seal strength needs headroom beyond what a one-time quality test demands. A seal that passes inspection but has minimal margin can still fail under the cumulative stress of a multi-day shipping journey.
Self-sealing and tamper-evident features matter more for direct shipping
Many e-commerce mailers use a built-in adhesive strip or tamper-evident closure that is rarely relevant for retail shelf bags, since retail packaging is typically sealed by the brand's own equipment rather than re-closed by a fulfillment operation. Film for these applications has to accommodate that closure mechanism reliably at the speeds fulfillment centers actually run.
Matching the film to the actual journey
The right starting point is mapping the bag's actual journey: shelf handling only, parcel network only, or both if the same package serves multiple channels. A film built for shelf appeal and a film built for transit survival are different specifications, and the cost of getting it wrong shows up as damage claims and returns rather than a visible defect at the point of sale.
