Chemical compatibility comes before everything else

The single most important question for a drum liner is whether the resin will resist degradation, swelling, or stress cracking from prolonged contact with the specific chemical it holds. Polyethylene resists a broad range of common industrial chemicals well, but strong solvents, certain acids, and aggressive oxidizers can require different resin choices or multi-layer structures with a chemically resistant inner layer. This decision has to be made based on the actual chemical, not a general assumption that polyethylene resists everything.

Seal integrity under static load and time

Drum liners typically hold their contents under sustained static pressure for extended periods, sometimes months, rather than being filled and used quickly. Seals need to maintain integrity under that sustained load and through any thermal cycling the drum experiences in storage or transit, not just survive an initial fill and seal test.

Puncture and abrasion resistance during fill and discharge

Liners get stressed during filling, when product flow and pressure push the liner against the drum wall, and again during discharge, when pumps, dip tubes, or vacuum systems interact directly with the liner surface. Gauge and resin selection need to account for this mechanical stress, particularly at the bottom of the liner where weight concentrates and discharge equipment makes direct contact.

Regulatory and compatibility documentation

Chemical and hazardous material shipping often comes with documentation requirements around material composition and compatibility. Buyers should confirm what documentation they need before placing an order, since gathering compatibility data and material certifications after the fact can delay a shipment that is otherwise ready to go.

Why this is not a commodity film decision

Unlike many flexible packaging applications where a standard resin blend covers most use cases, drum liners need to be evaluated chemical by chemical. The cost of choosing wrong is not a weak seal on a retail bag; it is a containment failure with a hazardous substance. That risk profile justifies a more deliberate specification process than most flexible packaging applications require.
